Fierce Females: Caitlyn Jenner

I’m bringing back #FierceFemales in a different capacity and I wanted to bring it back with one of the fiercest females in the public eye today. On Monday, June 1st, 2015 Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce Jenner, graced the cover of Vanity Fair Magazine with nothing but poise and grace.

There was a Katie Couric special and two Keeping Up With The Kardashians specials prior to Caitlyn going public as her true self but Vanity Fair was the first time Caitlyn Jenner has been in the public eye and it warmed my heart to see all the positive comments from fans and celebrities.

Some are saying all of this is a media grab, another Kardashian circus to parade around, I disagree but if it is so what? The best part about this being so public is the conversation we are all forced to have because of it.

When my parents were young this wasn’t something that was discussed, so to sit down with them and watch those interviews and then have an educated adult discussion about all of this is a beautiful thing. Truth be told, I didn’t know a lot about what it meant to be transgender or transsexual and taking the time to watch these interviews really helped me learn more about it.

I posted a tweet the day the Vanity Fair cover was revealed showing my support and underneath is one of the replies I received:

It’s very sad to think about everyone out there who can’t be themselves because of how expensive it is for sex reassignment surgery. That being said, this is why I think what Caitlyn Jenner has done is so important. This conversation needs to be had so that other trans people can, hopefully, one day be themselves.

This means affordable medical support to help in the transition. Caitlyn Jenner wasn’t herself for 65 years, think about that for a minute, could you imagine something inside nagging at you for 65 years telling you this wasn’t right?

Laverne Cox, a very powerful woman who I idolize, said it best in a tumblr post of hers:

“Most trans folks don’t have the privileges Caitlyn and I have now have. It is those trans folks we must continue to lift up, get them access to healthcare, jobs, housing, safe streets, safe schools and homes for our young people. We must lift up the stories of those most at risk, statistically trans people of color who are poor and working class. I have hoped over the past few years that the incredible love I have received from the public can translate to the lives of all trans folks. Trans folks of all races, gender expressions, ability, sexual orientations, classes, immigration status, employment status, transition status, genital status etc.. I hope, as I know Caitlyn does, that the love she is receiving can translate into changing hearts and minds about who all trans people are as well as shifting public policies to fully support the lives and well being of all of us. The struggle continues…”

Prior to this life change Caitlyn has had an inspiring life and I can’t wait to see what she does next!

Note: I know people are upset about everyone commenting on just Caitlyn’s looks (see Jon Stewart) and I know I did, so I just wanted to post this to elaborate on the importance of what she is doing and how powerful I think she is.
